Whether your experience in the past with SEO has been good or bad it is still a necessary part of any marketing strategy. SEO is more than putting together a long line of keywords and shoving them altogether into your website and then hoping for the best. This is where so many businesses get SEO wrong. On the other hand people believe that SEO has to be time consuming and incredibly complicated.
Onpage SEO is fairly easy to grasp and you do need a web developer who knows what they are doing to make sure that the technical aspects of your website are done right. Here is how you get onpage SEO done right.
- Keywords: You need to identify the right keywords, these are the words or phrases that people type into Google that will allow them to find your products and services. You have to look at your business from the point of view of a customer and not someone who already knows what your business is all about.
- Broad keywords are not your friend: For the sake of example let’s say you’re a lawyer, trying to rank for the keyword “lawyer” isn’t going to work for you. First it will be expensive and time consuming and the word could be applicable to anything from “divorce lawyer” to “how to become a lawyer”, none of which will apply to you. Instead try to rank for something a little longer and more applicable, “best divorce lawyer, your city”.
- Content: Your content and keywords go hand in hand. You need to use words from your keyword list in the content of your website, while making it sound perfectly natural. You still need to put keywords into page titles, headings and the first paragraph of your content.
- Updates and new content: This is often overlooked but your need maintain your website, broken links, slow loading pages and everything else that could go wrong needs to be fixed. New content should be added on a regular basis.
Ignoring SEO altogether because it seems too difficult is a mistake. Just because you don’t sell things through your website or it is only for informational purposes that doesn’t mean you can ignore it. Everybody does research before they buy things, and that means they look on Google. If you ignore SEO then you’re missing out on plenty of opportunities to land new clients. SEO is what makes you visible and if you don’t have the skills to do it yourself then work with an SEO agency who can help you accomplish your marketing goals.
